Thanks to Bounty Films for the screening of The Yellow Sea
In the vein of its violent and nihilistic contemporaries, this South Korean cat-and-mouse thriller features the return of the director and acting trio from the all-successful 'The Chaser'.
Ku-nam is a cab driver in Yanbian, on the Chinese side between China, North Korea and Russia. His wife moved to South Korea 6 months ago with a promise to send money back yet still hasn't been heard from. As Ku-nam falls deeper into debt, he receives a tempting proposal - if he were to travel to South Korea and murder someone, his debt will be cleared and he will also have the chance to reunite with his wife.
Despite his meticulous planning, Ku-nam does not account for unexpected circumstances, and a string of those, sadly for him, puts him in the crossfire between the police, the South Korean mob and the Chinese mafia.
'The Yellow Sea' is not a story for the faint hearted; brutal and uncompromising it purposefully leaves the audience unsettled by the gloomy reality of those trapped in the middle of its dark politics. Shot with considerable flair by Hong Jong-na and featuring power house performances from its leads, 'The Yellow Sea' has been a festival favourite across Europe for good reason.
