Combining the imagination of 'Amelie' and the beauty of 'Midnight in Paris', the closing film of the festival is one that lingers in the mind of its audience long past its final credits. 'Starry Starry Night' is a story about the innocence of youth and the magical moments of yesterday, which strikes the cords deep inside the viewer's heart. This Taiwanese film, funded by China, marks the emergence of a sophisticated, yet audience friendly teen-centred drama.
Mei (Xu Jiao) is a young and hopeful schoolgirl whose imagination provides a path for her to escape from the dullness and the troubles that creep into her life unwanted and despised. In between the fights between her parents and her memories of growing up in her grandfather's cottage in the woods, she finds new hope through the new boy in school, Jay (Lin Hui Ming), with whom she sets off on a journey of romantic landscapes and endearing memories. Leaving the trivial banality of the 'real world' behind, Mei discovers new strength to fight against the dullness and greyness that surrounds her. A visual masterpiece, 'Starry Starry Night' has generated excellent reviews and considerable attention form critics and audiences alike.
